About Alexander College
Digging Deep into Scripture and the Faith of Israel
In Jewish tradition there is almost nothing as important as studying and learning.
For observant Jews of ancient times as well as today, study centers on Torah and its many commentaries. Jewish practice demonstrates a passion to know Scripture, not just for the sake of knowledge, but for the sake of obedience as obeying God's commandments is seen as the highest form of worship. To truly worship God one must live in obedience to Him. "How can we obey," asked the ancient Jewish sages "unless we know the will of God?" Therefore, Jewish study is motivated less by trying to discover abstract truth about God, but on doing His will. It is this understanding of study that was at the heart of Jesus' discipleship training.
The goal of Alexander College is no less the same. We are dedicated to the task of of helping Christians come into a deeper understanding of the sacred text so that we may become better disciples of Jesus the Messiah. This emphasis on discipleship together with academic study make Alexander College unique in Israel.
The college is named after Michael Solomon Alexander, a rabbi and Hebrew scholar who was the first Anglican bishop in Jerusalem. More significantly he was the first Jewish bishop in the Holy City for almost 1900 years. Before departing for Jerusalem the Archbishop of Canterbury gave Bishop Alexander a mandate for establishing a college connected with Christ Church. The Hebrew College, as it was known then, began in 1843 but closed a short time later. In the 1960s a college was established at St. George's, the Anglican Cathedral in East Jerusalem, and over the years it has been home to many noted scholars such as George Danby and Denis Baly, the biblical geographer. Yet, the re-establishment of a college at Christ Church that focuses on the Jewish context of the New Testament, the Hebrew language and Jewish-Christian relations throughout the ages is significant as a return to the original purposes for which Christ Church was first established.
Alexander College meets a growing demand from clergy and laity for greater in-depth biblical education from a Jewish perspective. Using the Holy Land as our classroom and the Bible as our textbook, Alexander College helps participants dig deep into the soil of Israel and recover their Jewish roots through our tours, language classes, seminars, courses, conferences and sabbaticals.
